Protein skimmers may be the most effective forms of filtration a marine aquarist can use, but they alone are not capable of taking care of an entire aquarium. The protein skimmers remove all sorts of gunk from the water, but these devices really only serve as a cleaning tool that extends the time between water changes. In a sense, they are quite similar to a media reactor or canister filter. Because of this, we cannot rely on the skimmer as the only form of filtration. Instead, water changes are the king of the hill when it comes to water filtration, and aquarists must stick to a strict regimen when it comes to them.
