For this week’s AquaNerd POTW, we’re traveling back in time a few million years with this fossilized starfish from the Houston Museum of Natural History. If you notice, the starfish has remained relatively unchanged for a really long time. The five-point shape of this ancient echinoderm is seen in modern day starfish, and it actually reminds us of the Asterina starfish that are commonly found in our marine aquariums. This particular fossil is of a much larger sea star, but the take home message is that so little about them has changed over the long haul.
