Tip of the Day – 5/2/2013

We’ve had a really crazy week outside of our little internet realm, so we apologize for the lack of content over the last couple of days. Fortunately, we’ve been able to make the recovery and get a few more articles out there for you. Now on to our Tip of the Day…

Did you know that corals poop? That’s right, those little polyps that we’re constantly gawking at in our our aquariums excrete waste material just like any other animal. Well, it may not be exactly like other animals, as corals only have one opening in which food enters and waste materials exit. Essentially, they poop out of their mouths. On the occasion, you may witness your corals defecating in your aquarium, with the act being most notable among large polyp corals. This “poop” can come out as long, stringy material or even as large chunks. It really depends on the coral and the type of food that the coral is eating. When corals poop, there’s no cause for concern. The coral may look odd, possibly with polyps retracted, but it will return to its normal look shortly after relieving itself.
