If you house eels, or at least plan to keep them, one thing you can do during the tank set up is to bury PVC pipes in the sand and through the rocks. These pipes will create safe places for the eels to hide that will not cave in if the rocks move over time or even shift suddenly during a land slide. Of course, you will have to keep the ends of the pipes sticking up out of the sand a little ways so that sand doesn’t blow down into it, and fill the pipe. Fortunately, if that does happen, you could either siphon the sand and detritus out, or let the eel do all of the work for you.
