Aquarium pumps are often blamed for random fish deaths. It’s not uncommon for a hobbyist to come across a fish that is either dead or dying, stuck to the side a pump. When happening upon such a sad sight, hobbyists usually blame the pump for the problem, usually resorting to wrapping the intake of the pump with some sort of foam material. While pumps can certainly inflict some damage, keep in mind that a perfectly healthy fish wouldn’t normally get sucked into a pump in the first place. If a fish is getting stuck to a pump, chances are that it was unhealthy and potentially going to die anyways. The pump was merely speeding the process along.
