Water change times are the perfect opportunity to perform other maintenance activities on your aquarium. Things like protein skimmer cup draining are a no brainer, but water changes are also great times to clean water pumps, pick algae and other gunk from overflow grills, and change or top-off media in your various reactors. We do caution that doing too much at one time can have a big impact on your aquarium. If that’s a concern, you don’t have to do everything during one water change. Instead, spread out the additional maintenance activities across multiple water changes, which should occur every couple weeks or so.
