When putting up your Christmas tree this year, be sure not to put it on the same electrical circuit as your aquarium. If you put them on the same circuit, you might trip a breaker, causing your tank to obviously shut off in the process. And part of the problem is that the trip may not happen right away or at any sort of regular interval. All it might take is a pump spooling up or a heater to kick on to cause the chaos.
