Tip of the Day – 12/31/2014

The end of the year is usually a joyous time, with people all over the world celebrating with fireworks and other elaborate displays. While this may be lots of fun, be careful when mixing fireworks and aquariums. What do we mean by that? It’s not like anyone would set off firecrackers in or near an aquarium. Even by handling fireworks slightly, your hands can become coated with gunpowder and other residues. If you happen to dabble in your aquarium after handling fireworks, you could introduce all sorts of nasty stuff, such as heavy metals, into the water. This is a big no no for reef aquariums, as heavy metals can kill corals and other invertebrates.
