Just a brief snipped of news regarding the AquaNerd Blog. We have temporarily, and potentially permanently removed the ability for people to sign up on the blog through the traditional WordPress channels. For some reason, we started getting a mass influx of spammers and somehow they were able to bypass their user roles (e.g. subscriber) and were somehow able to save articles in our database. Luckily, none of the spammers had the capability to publish articles, as only I have that ability, so none of their junk made it to the front page of the site.
To combat the spammers, we initially tinkered with security settings and disabled plugins that we suspected were letting spammers in undetected. Despite this, the spam kept coming, so we decided to delete all those “subscribers” who we though were spammers and remove the ability for regular blog readers to sign up to the site. Again, this is only though the traditional WordPress channels, but readers can still subscribe to us via our RSS feed or follow us on Twitter or Facebook. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
