Here is a bit of news that caught us off guard. While perusing many of the well-known aquarium equipment retailers to scope out all of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals for our annual roundup article, we hit up ReefGeek. To our surprise, the online retailer and once exclusive distributor of ATI Aquaristik products had a messaged posted that they had shut down. In doing a quick web search, it looks like ReefGeek had shut down sometime back in August, and we’re still puzzled as to how that news flew under our radar (not that we have an impeccable radar, but we do dig quite a bit).
For us, ReefGeek has not only been a staple company of the hobby, but one we’ve bought things from and whose crew we’ve rubbed elbows with. So, it’s really sad for us to see them close their doors. But, they’re not entirely gone. If you recall, back in February of 2012, they split off their wholesale operation from their retail establishment when they founded Clear Choice Distributors. As far as we know, Clear Choice is still functioning at full capacity and carrying on the ReefGeek spirit, just not so much in the broader public eye.
As for the statement about the shutdown, here’s the text posted on the ReefGeek homepage:
Dear Valued ReefGeek Customer,
It has dawned on us that we have worked by the ocean for 14 years and the only salt water we have interacted with has been in our tanks.
So ReefGeek has gone surfing for a little bit.
